Dr. Music Paid Tribute in Song at Convocation Hall

Toronto jazz musicians will gather on Sunday, November 18 at Convocation Hall to celebrate the life of the legendary keyboard player and composer Doug Riley, best known as Dr. Music, who passed away at the age of 62 this past August.

Organized by Riley’s family and a handful of admirers, the concert will feature headliners including Michael Burgess, David Clayton Thomas, Motherlode, Dr. Music, Famous People Players, and Planet Earth, along with many celebrated jazz artists, including Phil Dwyer, Mike Murley, Ted Quinlan, Guido Basso, Don Thompson and more.

During the concert a new musical piece written by vocalist Debby Fleming entitled Song For the Doctor will be performed. The song features a 12-piece band accompanying choir of 43 singers who worked with Riley over the years, including such names as such as Jackie Richardson, Dione Taylor, Sharon Lee Williams, Shawne Jackson, Colina Phillips, Cal Dodd, Wayne St. John, Roy Kenner, George Olliver, John Finley, Molly Johnson, Danny B. The song will be released as a single in early November, and will be made available for purchase at the event. All proceeds from the sale will go towards The Doug Riley Scholarship Fund through the U of T Faculty of Music.

Doug Riley received the Order of Canada in recognition of the contribution he made on the Canadian music scene. The skillful B3 and keyboard player was equally at home in R&B, Blues and Country circles as he was in Jazz and Classical genres.
