Grammy award winner Diana Krall, Nanaimo native and renowned pianist/vocalist, was named an officer of the Order of Canada on Monday, August 30, 2005.

Krall, who began studying piano at the age of four, grew up in a musical family, playing along with her father and grandmother, both pianists. She first performed publicly at the age of 15 in the clubs of Nanaimo, and was till a teenager when she won a scholarship to Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music, entering the school in the early 80’s. After graduation, she moved to L.A., where she met Jimmy Rowles and the famous bassist Ray Brown, who took her under his wing and with whom she recorded in the 90’s.

Ms. Krall has broken every preconceived notion that traditional jazz isn’t commercial, her recordings have sold millions, going and platinum in Canada and throughout the world. Her 1999 release When I Look in Your Eyes album sat at #1 on the Billboard charts for 52 weeks, winning her two Grammy Awards (Best Jazz Vocalist, Best Engineering), and was the first jazz recording in over 25 years to be nominated for Best Album of the Year. She has been nominated twice for the award since that time, in 1997 for her All For You tribute to Nat King Cole, and in 1998 for her trio recording Love Scenes.

She has been recognized for her achievements in Canada by the music industry, being bestowed several Juno Awards, and by her fellow countrymen with being named to the Order of British Columbia, inducted into the Canadian Walk of Fame, and now the highest honour paid in Canada, being named as Companion to the Order of Canada.

In 2003, Krall married her sweetheart, rock star Elvis Costello, and they have homes in both New York and Canada. Diana Krall has never forgotten her Canadian roots, and is quick to mention her birth home in her concerts throughout the globe. We as Canadians are very proud to have a modern day star of jazz who continues to represent us as one of the greatest ambassadors this country has ever seen.
