Wednesday October 19, 2005

On Wednesday October 19, 2005 Jazz Focus Records will proudly present a concert with Calgary pianist Brian Buchanan and his Ensemble at the Beat Niq Jazz & Social Club. The concert is in support of a new CD release on Jazz Focus Records titled the Brian Buchanan Ensemble Plays the Music of Dennis van Westerborg.

Brian Buchanan is well known to Calgary audiences. He has been a mainstay in Alberta for more than twenty years as a bandleader and jazz presenter. His two previous recordings Avenues (Jazz Focus Records) and Soulstice (Isotope Records) have earned him international acclaim. Jazz Times magazine is quoted as saying “Brian Buchanan and his Ensemble celebrate the quality of jazz in Canada.”

The Brian Buchanan Ensemble Plays the Music of Dennis van Westerborg is an original work of melodies from Medicine Hat tunesmith Dennis van Westerborg with compositional support and arrangements from Brian. The recording features an all-star Alberta ensemble led by Buchanan that includes the superb musicianship of Kent Sangster, Bob Tildesley, Mike Lent, Sandro Dominelli and Brent Wright.

The Beat Niq performance will showcase music from the CD as well as several of Brian’s own compositions and arrangements of jazz classics. A reviewer once stated that “Brian is a solid pianist/composer whose style is contemporary yet steeped in jazz tradition.”

The Beat Niq Jazz Club is located at 811- 1st Street S.W. in Calgary. Tickets for this event are $20.00 and can be purchased in advance at Megatunes or at the door. Performance will commence at 8:00 p.m.
