Calgary native violinist/violist Tanya Kalmonovitch continues to make us proud with the New York debut of her new quartet featuring trombonist Joe Fiedler, bassist John Hebert, and fellow Canadian Owen Howard. The quartet appears November 22nd at Cornelia Street Cafe in the Big Apple, and will offer their extended compositions, free improvisation and powerful rhythm in an avant-guard approach to Latin music.

Since her recent move to New York, Kalmonovitch has made her mark with her innovative approach to viola that blends contemporary, classical, and free improvisation. Julliard trained, Tanya has made frequent trips to India to study Karnatak music, which is now infused in her work.

Kalmanovitch has quickly built an international reputation for her highly innovative style, and has shared the stage with a rich diversity of artists such as Ronan Guilfoyle , John Cage, John Stowell, The Turtle Island String Quartet, and Shujaat Husain Khan among the many notables. She was nominated for All About Jazz New York’s ‘Best New Talents’ of 2004, and boasts an impressive catalogue of recordings.

Maintaining an active interest in contemporary classical music, Tanya has created a repertoire for improvising string players and is a highly regarded educator, taking jazz string pedagogy to a whole new dimension.

“…viola/violinist Tanya Kalmanovitch only recently made the move to New York and is already creating quite a splash. Nominated as one of AAJ-NY’s ‘Best New Talents’ of 2004, expect to hear her name and music more as time goes by.” All About Jazz-NY
