Colin Linden to Host Maple Blues Awards

The 9th Annual Maple Blues Awards gala is set for January 16, 2006, at the Phoenix Theatre in Toronto. Juno/Grammy Award winner Colin Linden will host the program that recognizes outstanding achievement in the Canadian blues music industry. Linden will also join special guests Garrett Mason (Halifax), David ‘Hurricane’ Hoerl (Vancouver) and Roxanne Potvin (Ottawa) to form the ‘Maple Blues Band’ for the event.

Presenting the awards will be industry leaders Holger Peterson (Stony Plain Records President, Order of Canada Recipient, CBC Radio One ‘Saturday Night Blues’ and CKUA Radio ‘Natural Blues’ host), Danny Marks (Jazz-FM9 ‘Bluez FM’ host), blues recording artist Sue Foley, Grammy award-winning musicologist Rob Bowman, Elaine Bomberry (Rez Bluez producer/host), Chuck Jackson and Johnny Max (AM 1430 ‘Sunday Night Soul’ hosts), DJ Randy Renaud (CHOM FM blues host), and Halifax Daily News music writer Sandy MacDonald. The International Artist of the Year Award will be presented by Jay Sieleman, director of the U.S. Blues Foundation based in Memphis.

On Sunday January 15, the ‘Blues Warm-up Showcase’will feature eight concerts by Maple Blues Nominees and other notable blues acts. Healey’s will host 2005 Talent Search Winners, and New Artist of the Year nominee ‘Wickens-Knight’, along with British roots music legend Steve Payne, Toronto vocalist Ndidi Onukwulu, and blues roots rockers Mr. Rick and the Biscuits. Chicago’s will host gospel shouter Danny Brooks, harmonica wizard Jerome Godboo, vocalist Shakura S’ Aida, and urban storyteller Brian Blain.

On the afternoon of Monday, January 16th, Monarch’s Pub features a Fireside Chat with Richard Flohil (promoter, publicist, journalist, editor), and interviewers Brad Wheeler (Globe & Mail), and Greg Quill (Toronto Star). Flohil is this year’s winner of the ‘Blues Booster Award’, recognizing his outstanding contribution to the blues over a span of 40 years. The event also features a performance by recording artist Harrison Kennedy, who is nominated in three categories this year.

Maple Blues Awards nominees are selected by a distinguished panel of blues experts from across Canada, and winners are selected by the online votes of Canadian blues fans. The full list of nominees is available at www.mapleblues.ca
