Decidedly Jazz Danceworks
jan . 6 – 14, 2006

For over twenty years Calgary based Decidedly Jazz Danceworks has been presenting their innovative “concert jazz dance” performances that blend original dance works with live jazz music. The company kicks off 2006 with their latest production, PULSE!, created and choreographed by DJD Artistic Director Vicki Adams Willis, and featuring original music by composer/music director/performer Kristian Alexandrov. Joining Alexandrov for all performances of PULSE! are bassist George Koller and Davide DiRenzo (drums/percussion). The show runs at the Epcor Centre for Performing Arts in Calgary January 6 – 14th.

Since its inception in 1984, Decidedly Jazz Dancework’s distinct and eclectic style has mixed African roots, rhythm, improvisation, and interplay with live jazz musicians, and has gained international fame for its electric performances through its touring activities. Their latest offering celebrates a wide range of styles and human experiences, from the soulful longings of the blues to the joyful exuberance of swing, with surprising, moving and hilarious stops along the way.

Kristian Alexandrov has been creating the music for DJD for over seven years, including a previous outing with bassist Koller and vocalist Julie Michels for the 2004 Pivoting Echoes. Throughout their steady growth, DJD has showcased top notch musicians in their productions, last year the company scored a major success with Bulla!, a powerful and exhilarating Cuban music based production that took the company on the road to Havana. Another notable previous production showcased jazz legend vocalist Mark Murphy.

Following their Calgary dates of Jan. 6 – 14, PULSE! heads out on a western Canadian tour, with multiple dates booked.
