Calgary drummer Tyler Hornby will present his quartet Jan 27 & 28th at Beat Niq Jazz Club in Calgary. Filling out the sound are fellow Calgary artists saxophonist Jim Brenan and bassist Kodi Hutchinson, and Edmonton pianist Chris Andrew.

Hornby is emerging as one of the most versatile and contemporary drummers in Canada, and is in great demand in the jazz, funk and latin circles. His playing exemplifies a melodic sense combined with taste, control, and rhythmic finesse.

Tyler also performs with Terrain, the electric jazz the electric jazz quartet where he serves as the drummer, co-leader, and co-composer. The group has released two albums, the self titled ‘Terrain’, and‘Time to Travel’. In late 2005 Tyler released his debut acoustic jazz album on Roadhouse Records entitled ‘Shadows of a Brighter Day’ featuring Mike Murley, Ingrid Jensen, Chip Stephens, and Ken Walker. The album showcases Tyler’s compositions, which contain post-bop, contemporary and odd meter influences with unique harmonic and melodic twists.

Currently on faculty at Mount Royal College, teaching drum set and jazz history, he also serves as a sessional drum set instructor at the University of Calgary, and boasts a long list of clinician credits. Tyler is also the founder and director of the Drum Set Educational Camp which is held annually each summer in Calgary, Canada.
