Ellis Marsalis & The Tommy Banks Quartet
Featuring P.J. Perry with Mike Lent & Sandro Dominelli

Jazz pianist Ellis Marsalis comes to Calgary for a one night only performance, appearing in concert with a top notch Canadian quartet lead by pianist Tommy Banks, and featuring saxophonist P.J. Perry, bassist Mike Lent and drummer Sandro Dominelli. Presented by C-Jazz, The Calgary Jazz Association, the concert will take place at the Epcor Centre For Performing Arts on Friday, March 24, 2006.

Originally slated to perform in Calgary in September 2005, Marsalis was forced to reschedule when Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated his hometown of New Orleans.

One of the leading Jazz educators in New Orleans and father to internationally acclaimed musicians Branford, Wynton, Delfeayo and Jason, Ellis taught many jazz notables including his sons, trumpeter Terrence Blanchard, pianist/singer Harry Connick, Jr. and saxophonist Donald Harrison. With a career spanning more than fourty years, he lists among his credits appearances on the Tonight show with Johnny Carson and Jay Leno, the Today show and the Arsenio Hall Show. Marsalis recently started ELM records and boasts a discography of over twenty albums.

Tommy Banks is hailed as one of the finest musicians in Canada, with a long list of composer, arranger, recording and performance credits. He is considered an international standard-bearer for Canadian culture and jazz music throughout the world, including leading Canada’s first music ensemble to appear in China. Through the sixties and seventies he hosted the acclaimed television series the Tommy Banks Show, and has appeared on countless recordings. Banks has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Juno he received for his live recording at the Montreaux Jazz Festival (with saxophonist P. J. Perry). Named an Officer of The Order of Canada in 1991, Banks was appointed to the Senate in 2000.

C-Jazz, The Calgary Jazz Association, hosts the annual September C-Jazz Festival. This year’s dates run September 5 – 9th, and will feature local and international artists in a variety of venues.
