The 2006 East Coast Music Awards were handed out last night in Charlottetown, PE in a nationally televised broadcast from the Maritime city. Hosted by the Trailer Park Boys, the awards show is receiving mixed reviews for it’s controversial choice of the rough around the edges hosts.

Indie rockers Matt Mays and his band El Torpedo dominated the event by taking home four of the coveted awards, winning FACTOR Album of the Year and Newcap Radio Rock Recording of the Year for their self-titled CD; Group of the Year, sponsored by XM Satellite Radio; and Single of the Year. Other multiple winners were Mary Jane Lamond, who was named Female Artist of the Year and received the Roots/Traditional Solo Recording of the Year; and Joel Plaskett, who won Male Artist of the Year and SOCAN Songwriter of the Year. George Canyon took home the fans’ choice Entertainer of the Year Award for the second consecutive year, and the Dr. Helen Creighton Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to legendary Cape Breton fiddler Buddy MacMaster The gala also featured highlights of a presentation to Sarah McLachlan, who received the ECMA’s Directors’ Special Achievement Award.

Jazz drummer Tom Roach, who released his “Piano Trios’ recording last year featuring pianists Dave Restivo and Doug Riley, with bassist Jamie Gatti, took home the award for the best Jazz Recording.
