A taste of Rio comes to Calgary on Saturday, March 18th, when the local Brazilian community celebrates its popular Carnaval event. The event features live Brazilian music with the legendary vocalist/musician Eduardo Mendoc, and a performance by “The Queen of Samba”, dancer Lucia Azevedo. The performers will be backed by a quartet formed by Rubim de Toledo, Mario Allende, Camila Louzada, and Ricardo Fonseca.

Mendonça is a leading Brazilian musician, composer, and recording artist, and boasts an impressive list of credits including command performances for Brazilian President João Baptista Figueiredo, Pope John Paul II, and former South Africa President Nelson Mandela. He has toured internationally and was featured in Paul Simon’s documentary music video, “Born at the Right Time.” Eduardo is a voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (Grammy), and is considered an ambassador of Brazilian music with his blend of Bossa-Nova, Brazilian standard tunes, MPB (Brazilian Popular Music) and original tunes.

The “Queen of Samba” Lucia Azevedo has toured North America and Europe with her own group, performing and teaching samba. She now calls Vancouver home, and has gained significant profile in the Canadian city, having appeared with the Vancouver Symphony, and feature performances at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival and the PNE”. Azevedo regularly returns to Rio to be showcased in the Carnaval street parade. Among her many talents, Lucia creates all of her colourful costumes. She currently teaches samba at the University of British Columbia, and recently was the subject of a documentary made about her life for Shaw TV.
