Blues Guitarist Gary Clark, Jr.

Texas bluesman to meet future Canadian fans

Blues guitarist Gary Clark, Jr. travels north from Austin, Texas to play the Yardbird Suite this weekend with Edmonton greats Ron Rault and Kenny Chalmers.

The 21-year-old singer and guitar player is known for his eerie ability to channel the music of the blues greats who have influenced him. His recent CD release Tribute, does just that, as Clark pays homage to Albert Collins, Albert King, Jimmy Reed, B.B. King, Elmore James, Muddy Waters, Lightnin’ Hopkins, and Hound Dog Taylor, in a fiery blend of originals and songs written by the masters.

Clark has performed clubs and festivals throughout the U.S., and makes his first Canadian appearance this weekend. He’s released three previous CD’s in addition to Tribute, playing all the instruments and handling all the production himself. He was named “Best Blues Musician” for the 2005 Austin Music Awards, and in 2001 Austin’s mayor proclaimed May 3 ‘Gary Clark, Jr. Day’ to honour Gary’s achievements ‘in maintaining this city’s claim to be the live music capital of the world.’
