Victoria Jazz Society “Blues Bash”

Three harmonica giants share one stage in Victoria tonight

(Victoria, Canada) As part of their Blues Bash Series, Victoria Jazz Society presents a triple-header of harmonica virtuosos tonight, with Mark Hummel, Billy Boy Arnold, and James Harman. The Blues Bash will take place at the Central Bar & Grill.

Mark Hummel is regularly voted as one of the top five harmonica players in the U.S. His style was influenced by Chicago sound, but he’s known for his own swinging sound. He has performed at major blues festivals throughout the US, Canada and Europe for over two decades, but the California bluesman is perhaps best known as the leader of the popular Blues Survivors Band. Since 1991 Mark has been producing and performing at his annual Blues Harmonica Blowout series. The list of participants is a who’s who of Blues harp history, James Cotton, Charlie Musselwhite, Norton Buffalo, Kim Wilson, Huey Lewis, and many others.

Billy Boy Arnold is one of the foremost practitioners of classic Chicago blues. His wailing harmonica playing and soulful vocals are a perfect match for his streetwise songwriting. The combination of Delta-influenced blues with a more urban sophistication not only defines Arnold’s sound, but was also a significant contribution in the early, formative days of rock and roll. His singular harmonica playing and silky vocals – not to mention his songwriting talents – place him at the forefront of classic Chicago blues artists.

James Harman’ music reflects his southeastern roots. During his notable career that spans over fourty years, he has released nearly thirty albums, and performed with such notables as Big Joe Turner, John Lee Hooker, Freddie King, Muddy Waters, Albert King, B.B. King, T-Bone Walker, Lloyd Glenn, Lowell Fulsom, Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson, Johnny “Guitar” Watson and Albert Collins. 17 of his songs have been featured in films and television, and Harman has received 14 W.C. Handy Blues Award nominations. James Harman has been inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame and won the “Best Blues Album of the Year” award from Canada’s Real Blues Magazine.
