CD RELEASE PARTY / ‘UGETSU’

VancouverJazz Sextet ‘Ugetsu’ Releases New CD

Vancouver based Ugetsu celebrates the release of their new CD “Live at The Cellar” at the Cellar jazz club for the second of two nights this evening in Vancouver.

Named after the Japanese word for “fantasy,” Ugetsu is a Vancouver-based sextet dedicated to the music and spirit of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers. The group is formed by top notch Vancouver jazz artists Jon Bentley (saxes), Bernie Arai (drums),
Brad Turner (trumpet), Rod Murray (trombone), Ross Taggart (piano), and André Lachance (bass).

Inspired by the early 60s incarnation of the Jazz Messengers (Freddie Hubbard, Curtis Fuller, Cedar Walton, Jymie Merritt, musical director Wayne Shorter and of course Art), Ugestu features the classic frontline of trumpet, tenor saxophone, and trombone, and plays classic hard bop arrangements from the Jazz Messengers book, transcribed by members of the band.

In May 2004 the band took a different direction featuring music composed by all members of the band with Art Blakey’s spirit still in mind. The two nights were captured on tape and ‘Live At The Cellar’ is now available.
