The 2006 JUNO Awards, Canada’s top music industry awards, took place last night in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Hosted by model/actress Pamela Anderson, the ceremony was broadcast live on CTV television.

The last several years have seen growing discontent with the way the winners are calculated, with record sales being the driving force, and industry insiders being the voters in almost all categories. The televised gala ceremony itself also receives great criticism for ignoring many of the categories during the broadcast, with only seven of the 39 awards handed out during the broadcast, while the bulk are handed out the night before at a non-televised event.

Anderson, whose presence at the music awards was already questioned, added an extra dose of negative response when she used the opportunity as host to criticize Canada, her native country before relocating to Los Angeles. Anderson’s comments regarding the continued practice of Canada’s annual Seal Hunt received loud boos from the audience.

The Jazz and Blues Categories held no surprises, with crooner Michael Buble capturing the lion’s share of awards in the Jazz category and one in Pop category. Pianist Diana Krall took the Vocal Jazz award, while multi-instrumentalist Don Thompson captured the Traditional Jazz award, and saxophonist Jane Bunnett received the Contemporary Jazz award for her Cuban recording. Boogie pianist Kenny ‘Blues Boss’ Wayne, who has been nominated on three previous occasions, won his first Juno for Blues Album of the Year.

The awards show will be hosted in Saskatchewan for 2007.
