Victoria Jazz Society Concert Series

Irving Mayfield and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra

The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra (NOJO) led by trumpeter Irvin Mayfield, is a swinging 16-piece big band featuring young New Orleans talent alongside seasoned jazz veterans. They stop off tonight in Victoria to share a taste of New Orleans with Canadian fans.

Founded in 2002 by Mayfield, NOJO performs the music of legendary jazz masters Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Thelonius Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, and Charles Mingus among others. For this performance, NOJO will present New Orleans: Now and Then, featuring arrangements by Mayfield of traditional New Orleans jazz, blues, swing, and spirituals.

Mayfield has established himself as a widely recognized musician, composer, and teacher, and has performed his arrangements of spirituals and original works with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and the Louisiana Philharmonic String Quartet. He also leads his own band, the Irvin Mayfield Quintet, and co-leads (with Bill Summers) Los Hombres Calientes, a Grammy Award-nominated and Billboard-winning Latin jazz band. He has 10 releases on the Basin Street Records and Half Note labels. In 2003 he was appointed Cultural Ambassador for the City of New Orleans and the State of Louisiana.

The Victoria Jazz Society will donate proceeds from the concert to the Baton Rouge Area Foundation to help provide the victims of Hurricane Katrina with food, water, clothing, housing and medical support. These funds will also lend special assistance to the Crescent City’s musicians who are the spirit of New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz.
