Swing Jazz Violinist Performs in Calgary This Weekend

Swing jazz violinist Karl Roth makes a welcomed appearance in Calgary this weekend at Beatniq Jazz Club, performing both tonight and tomorrow with his latest trio of guitarist Dave Hamilton and bassist Simon Fisk.

Known for his distinctive sound that has been described as Dr. John meets Stephane Grappelli, a growling vocal style, and a repertoire full of humour, classics, standards and oddball treasures, Roth generates crowds whenever he performs.

The musican/vocalist has performed and led his blues and swing bands for the past 25 years in Canada, performing clubs throughout the nation, appearing at national and international festivals, featured in Symphony Pops Concerts. His recording credits include his first CD Release Everybody Wants to Be a Cat, which captured the attention of the press and a video of the title cut from the CD saw rotation on BRAVO Television. Roth has independently released two more albums since that time, his 1998 Christmas release, and almost behavin’ (2001), and has been featured on national television, including MuchMusic and Country Beat.

Guitarist Hamilton is perhaps most well known for his blistering country licks, but recently wowed audiences during the Guitarmania Vll showcase with his jazz and swing sound. Bassist Fisk leads his own group, the Simon Fisk Trio, who released their second critically acclaimed CD Intent last year.
