Coastal Jazz & Blues Presents Contemporary Jazz

As part of it’s ongoing concert programming series, Coastal Jazz and Blues Society in Vancouver is presenting back-to-back contemporary jazz concerts, featuring the Ab Baars Quintet on April 26th, followed by Francois Houle New Quartet on April 27th, 2006.

Ab Baars Quartet

One of the most celebrated players on the Dutch improv scene, saxophonist/clarinetist Ab Baars co-founded his first group, Cumulus, in the late ’70s. In this band, attempts were made to break through the traditional theme-solo-theme pattern. Baars’ playing became more abstract after collaborating in 1987 with American saxophonist/composer Roscoe Mitchell, and the Monk Project of Misha Mengelberg’s Instant Composers Pool. After studying with the late clarinetist/composer John Carter in 1989, Baars returned to Holland to form his trio with bassist Wilbert de Joode and drummer Martin van Duynhoven. He has recently expanded his trio to include trombonist Joost Buis.

François Houle New Quartet

Vancouver clarinetist François Houle explores many facets of modern music—from electronic manipulation to acoustic contemporary chamber music. Jazziz Magazine states that, “Houle executes original, well-defined melodic lines with stunning clarity and rich tonal resonance.” Francois has released more than a dozen critically acclaimed recordings including a recent CD of solo improvisations called Aerials (Drip Audio). For this band Houle has written a new songbook rooted in the classic two-horn front line tradition. With JP Carter trumpet, Tommy Babin bass, Isaah Contractor drums
