2006 Thousand Island Jazz Festival to Feature Pianist Oliver Jones

Marking their sixth year of operations, the Thousand Islands Jazz Festival is scheduled for May 4-13 in Brockville, Ontario. The festival’s headliners include a blend of national and international jazz artists, with concerts held in various downtown locations.

Beginning in 2005, the “Masters of Jazz Series” continues in 2006, and this year features pianist Oliver Jones, who will appear with his trio May 13th, the closing night of the festival. Jones, a Montreal native, was performing publicly at age 5 in his hometown, going on to perform throughout Canada and the US for over seven decades. He recorded his first CD in the eighties when he met Justin Time record label owner Jim West, and has since produced an impressive catalogue of recordings with his groups that feature such legends as Jeff Hamilton, Skip Bey, Ed Thigpen, and Clark Terry among the many. He has received the Martin Luther King Jr. Award, the Order of Quebec, the Governor General’s Award and the Order of Canada for his significant contributions to Canadian jazz music.

Trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, who played with Ray Charles, is also a featured performer. His predominant style is New Orleans and the last few years he’s been working on a project that takes the audience through Louis Armstrong’s career.

Each year since the festival’s inception has seen increasing numbers in attendance and general popularity around the community. Last year attendance broke the 2,000 mark, with an average of about 400 people attending each show.
