Vancouver Jazz Festival a Star Studded Affair
The 2006 TD Canada Trust Vancouver International Jazz Festival, which will run from June 23-July 2, has announced an impressive group of headliners for the annual event.
Pianist McCoy Tyner, vocalists Tony Bennett, pianist/vocalist Mose Allison, Sheila Jordan, Brazilian Seu Jorge, blues singer Neko Case, and Senegalese singer Baba Maal will make appearances. Also announced are the Paris-based Belmondo Brothers with Yusef Lateef, turntablist/techno artist Buck 65, Latin giant Paquito de Rivera, the Mike Stern Band and the Bobby Hutcherson Quartet are among the many headline acts.
In tribute to the birthplace of jazz, New Orleans is honoured by concerts featuring Allen Toussaint with Elvis Costello, the venerable Dr. John, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
The festival also boasts a jazz music contingent from Scandanavia, with the northern European countries represented by E.S.T. , Mats Gustafsson with Lotta Melin, and Jeanette Lindström among others.
Canadian representation is first rate, with pianist Renee Rosnes, Roberto Occhipiniti, Jim Byrnes, Mike Allen, Marc Atkinson, Bill Coon, Doug Cox & Sam Hurrie, Michel Donato, Hilario Duran, Kevin Elaschuk Trio, Oliver Gannon, Miles Black, Chris Gestrin, Kate Hammet-Vaughn, Ron Johnston, Andre LaChance, Jillian LeBeck, Ian McDougall, Karin Plato, Jennifer Scott, Chris Sigerson, Denzal Sinclair, Ross Taggart, and a host of others slated for concerts.
There is also a full roster of world music and blues/gospel artists, as well as several avant-garde and free jazz concerts on the bill.
