Polish Jazz Musicians Make First Trip to Canada
Calgary drummer Tyler Hornby three Alberta concerts with his group the Tyler Hornby Canada/Poland Quartet, performing at Calgary’s BeatNiq Jazz Club on Thursday & Friday May 4 & 5th, and Edmonton’s Yardbird Suite on Saturday, May 6th.
The Alberta dates mark the Canadian debut for the ensemble, who completed a highly successful tour in Poland last fall and garnered rave reviews for their original post-bop and contemporary composition and sound.
Saxophonist Maciej Sikala has been recognized with numerous awards in his native country, and has recorded over 40 albums including two with Lester Bowie. Bassist Piotr Lemanczyk has performed across Europe with numerous artists, and recently released his first solo jazz CD. Maciek Grzywacz, one of Poland’s most versatile guitarists and an accomplished composer, comes to Canada after recently performing with modern jazz-fusion bassist Avishai Cohen.
Drummer Tyler Hornby, who also acts as leader, rounds out the quartet. Hornby recently released his first solo disc ‘Shadows of a Brighter Day’, and is a founding member of the acclaimed contemporary jazz group Terrain.
