Toronto Jazz Festival Features Over 350 Concerts

The 2006 TD Canada Trust Toronto Jazz Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary with an all star lineup of concerts June 23 – July 2 in the Ontario city. Featuring over 1500 musicians performing over 350 concerts spread over ten days and twelve nights in various locations, the festival was recently voted the Best Jazz Festival in Canada at the National Jazz Awards.

New this year are two series, the Euro-Jazz and Cabaret Series, as well as two new celebrations, Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day and Phat Tuesday, as well as a broadcast centre featuring Toronto’s JAZZ.FM91 Radio.

Headline acts offer a diverse choice of talent, including jazz legends Dave Brubeck, McCoy Tyner, Charlie Hunter, Pharoah Saunders, Kenny Garrett, McCoy Tyner, and Charlie Hunter, jazz-fusion superstars including Roy Ayers, legendary blues singer Etta James, Latin giants Hilario Duran and Paquito D’Rivera, Brazilian Samba soul artist Seu Jorge, Hip-hop pioneers De La Soul, funk diva Sharon Jones, soul singer Divine Brown, and turntablist Buck 65 among the many.

The Canadian contingent of artists includes such established artists as Rob McConnell, Roy Patterson, Jim Galloway, Bill McBirnie and John MacLeod, as well as emerging artists such as pianist Laila Biali.

The Euro-Jazz series will showcase some of the brightest stars in European jazz, include the Igor Butman Quartet, Joost Buis, Wibutee, Jeanette Lindstrom Quartet and Zanusi Five, while the Cabaret Series hosts six entertainers from the worlds of theatre, film and dance, with Adi Braun, George Evans, Andy Bey, Sandra Caldwell, Michel Berube and Lori Cullen.

Over a dozen French musicians will take part in the French Connection Series as part of the Sain-Jean-Baptiste Day celebration, while the birthplace of jazz, New Orleans, is paid tribute by the festival’s Phat Tuesday event, featuring Crescent City legends Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

JAZZ.FM91, Canada’s only 24 hour radio station dedicated to jazz will broadcast live from the heart of the festival for the entire ten days.
