Canmore Launches First Annual Jazz Festival

The Canadian Rockies town of Canmore has announced it will be hosting its first annual jazz festival on Saturday, June 10, at Centennial Park on the Stan Rogers Stage.

The inaugural event is featured as part of the artsPeak Arts Festival weekend which runs June 9 – 11, which will showcase a variety of arts activities and events. Jazz festival headliners include PJ Perry, Neil Swainson, the John Hyde Trio, the Hutchinson/Andrew Trio, and Michael Bates.

The Canmore international Jazz Festival (CiJf) will be presented by the Canmore Jazz Festival Society, and will feature an afternoon programme of big bands and combos. Acknowledging the importance of building strong roots, Canmore and Banff school jazz bands will share the stage with local musicians and touring professionals, as will the Valley Winds Big Band and a local collective led by Canmore trumpeter Ben Miles.

Confirmed artists include: Juno Award-winning saxophonist P.J. Perry (Edmonton) in concert with virtuoso bassist and composer Neil Swainson (Toronto); the John Hyde Trio (Calgary) lead by the bassist and Mount Royal College jazz educator; the Hutchinson/Andrew Trio with bassist Kodi Hutchinson (Calgary) and pianist Chris Andrew (Edmonton); and Michael Bates & his Outside Sources Project (New York) double bassist/composer.

The festival event is free to the public, and is being supported by generous local businesses.
