“Legends of Jazz Showcase” Launches in Canada

The “Legends of Jazz Showcase with Ramsey Lewis” hits the stores in Canada today. Released earlier this year in the U.S., the CD and DVD are the result of the television series by the same name.

“Legends of Jazz” is the first weekly television series in over fourty years to showcase jazz legends and their music. Acknowledging the legacy and contributions the greats in jazz have made, the series runs weekly in the U.S. on PBS, and is hosted by Ramsey Lewis. Lewis collaborated with Larry Rosen and Lee Rosenberg to bring the series to reality, with plans to run the series annually, and will feature an array of top names in the industry. The CD & DVD release will accompany each season’s highlight performances.

Artists featured in this year’s series include: Tony Bennett, Chick Corea, Al Jarreau, Dave Brubeck, Billy Taylor, David Sanvorn, Phil Woods, Pat Metheny, Jim Hall, George Duke, Marcus Miller, Lee Ritenour, Clark Terry, Roy Hargrove, Chris Botti, Ivan Lins, Eddie Palmieri, the late Ray Barretto, Dave Valentin, Keb’ Mo’, Robert Cray, Jane Monheit, John Pizzarelli, Kurt Elling, Benny Golson, Chris Potter, Joey DeFrancesco, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and many more.

The television segments are comprised of performances and engaging dialogue between the artists, many of them performing together for the first time. The series not only documents the history of jazz, but is also history in the making.

The double disc CD and the DVD is a collection of more than 50 performances selected from the television series.

Available at all major outlets, the CD & DVD are a must-have for any jazz lover, and are an important historical piece documenting the growth and development of the idiom.
