Oshawa Jazz & Blues Festival to Launch 5th Year

The Oshawa Jazz and Blues Festival has announced its lineup for its fifth annual festival and features a strong lineup of Canadian talent.

Running Aug. 7 to 13, the festival program includes performances by guitarist Colin Linden, Latin jazz band Cimarron, vocalist Heather Bambrick, blues guitarists Jack de Keyzer, Carlos del Junco and David Rotundo, and the Downchild Blues Band.

A host of concerts, club, and other events will take place at various locations throughout the week, with the showcase free day-long Main Event to take place on Saturday, June 12th, at Memorial Park.

Headliners appearing at the Main Event include guitarist Colin Linden, Juno Award-winning and Grammy-nominated musician, composer and producer. Linden has played on 300 albums, produced 60 and has a successful solo career in country blues. He also plays a key role with both Blackie and the Rodeo Kings.

Making an appearance on mainstage is Toronto’s Latin Jazz ensemble Cimarron, lead by Luis Mario Ochoa. The all-star cast of musicians features special guests Paquito D’Rivera, Guido Basso, and Luis Ochoa Sr. (founding member of Cuba’s Trio Voces de Oro). Luis Mario Ochoa teaches the renowned Humber College Institute.

Also appearing on the bill are guitarist George Grosman with his Trio, swing ensembles Bradley & the Bouncers and Mood Swing, the 10 pc. ensemble Babes in Jazzland, and vocalist Angela Scappatura,

Other events throughout the week include a day-long barbecue and blues patio party on Monday, Aug. 7th, with Carlos del Junco, Juno award winner Jack de Keyzer, David Rotundo, Aaron Griggs and George Olliver. A holiday for local Oshawans, the event takes place at a local club.

The annual opening lecture this year features Jesse Stewart, ethnomusicologist, composer and musician. Stewart’s creative work crosses disciplinary boundaries, exploring the links between the visual and the sonic arts. Jesse Stewart on Tuesday, Aug. 8 at the Robert McLaughlin Library.

The Jazz Divas Showcase returns for the second year on Wed. Aug 9th at the Jubilee Pavillion, and is devoted exclusively to female jazz and blues singers. Hosted by Heather Bambrick, Jazz FM personality and National Jazz Award winner, guests include Liberty Silver, June Garber, Melissa Stylianou and Eliana Cuevos.

Swing Night, slated for Thursday, August 10th, features dancing under the stars to the Swing Shift Big Band with vocalist David Statham. Held in the beautiful gardens of the popular tourist attraction and national historic site Parkwood Estate.

Returning to the festival August 11th is the Downchild Blues Band, who performed at the inaugural event in 2002. Downchild Blues Band emerged from the Toronto scene 35 years ago as the brainchild of Donnie Walsh, and has played close to 7,500 gigs and won multiple awards during that time. Joining the group is special guest Danny Marks, holder of the Toronto Blues Society’s Blues With A Feeling prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. Musician Marks is also the producer/host of JAZZ FM’s Sunday night blues show.
