Pat LaBarbera Quartet Performs in Regina

Regina jazz lovers are in for a treat when tenor saxophonist Pat Labarbera hits town to perform on Friday, September 15 at the Royal Regina Golf Club.

Labarbera, who is known for his lyrical sensibility and improvisational skills imbued in the style of John Coltrane, is joined for the performance by Vanessa Rodrigues (organ), Mike Rud (guitar), and Jon McCaslin (drums). The concert is being presented by the Regina Jazz Society as the kickoff to the newly-named “Jazz Regina” program, the Society’s ongoing concert series.

Born in New York in 1944, Pat and his younger brothers John (trumpeter) and Joe (drummer) learned the foundations of music from their clarinetist father. Pat continued his studies under the tutelage of saxophone giants Don Menza, Lee Konitz and Joe Henderson among others, and attended Berklee College of Music, where he studied arranging and composition.

He joined Buddy Rich’s band (1967-74) as featured tenor soloist , and in 1975 Elvin Jones’ Jazz Machine, with whom he continued performing through to the 1980’s. He also played with Woody Herman’s and Louis Bellson’s bands.

Moving to Toronto in 1974, LaBarbera traveled extensively while building a long list of performance and studio credits in Canada. A respected educator, over the years his work at Humber College, U of T, York University and a multitude of workshops and jazz camps has helped to guide the careers of a generation of jazz notables such as Ralph Bowen, Alex Dean, Vern Dorge, Kirk MacDonald, and Mike Murley among the many.

LaBarbera possesses a vast musical vocabulary and a near- encyclopaedic knowledge of improvisational theory. He is best known for his up-tempo, Coltrane-influenced sound, but his sublime ballad work proves that Stan Getz and Lester Young et al have also inspired him.

With a continually growing discography, Pat Labarbera has released several titles under his own name, and numerous appearances as sideman.
