Yardbird Suite Kicks Off 2006-07 Season With New York/Canadian Connection

Edmonton’s Yardbird Suite launches a new season of world class jazz and blues concerts on September 22 when the Steve Hudson Quintet appears at the venerable club.

New York based pianist Hudson is joined by fellow founder of the group Mark DeJong (saxophonist), Mike Nordzy (bass), David Freeman (percussion), and Craig Brenan (trombone) for the concert featuring original jazz music.

Formed in 2003 by Hudson and DeJong when students of Rutgers Mason Gross School of the Arts, the Steve Hudson Quintet (SHQ) has built a large following in the New York area for its improvised fusion of jazz, Classical Indian, funk, and rock music. The group is dedicated to writing music centred around the interests of the musicians, resulting in the unique sound that has become their signature.

The mix of Canadian/US members (Alberta audiences are familiar with natives Mark DeJong and Craig Brenan) will be appearing at the Yardbird Suite as part of a western Canadian tour, with September dates booked in Calgary, Saskatoon, Swift Current, Lloydminster, and Ft McMurray.

The group has released one critically acclaimed CD Outer Bridge and has announced a second impending release.
