Oliver Jones Trio Headlines All-Canadian Jazz Festival

Canada’s finest in jazz are showcased next week as the fifth annual All-Canadian Jazz Festival runs September 22-24 in Port Hope, Ontario.

Legendary pianist Oliver Jones headlines the 2006 festival, along with a full roster of Canadian jazz giants including the Jake Langley Quartet, the Michelle Gregoire Quintet, and “Between Friends,” the jazz/blues/ roots trio featuring Mose Scarlett, Jackie Washington & Ken Whiteley among the many.

Also making appearances are vocalists Melissa Stylianou with her quartet of Rob Piltch, Andrew Downing and Davide Direnzo, and Diana Panton, who appears with legends Don Thompson and Reg Schwager.

“Two New Voices,” the festival’s opening concert Friday evening, features two up and coming vocal talents on the jazz scene, Kellylee Evans (Ottawa) and DK Ibomeka (Toronto).

On Saturday at noon trumpeter Kevin Clark leads the popular “Blow Your Own Horn” Jazz Parade, an annual event that brings a taste of New Orleans to the Ontario city as it winds its musical way through the streets.

Local music students will have the opportunity to work with master musicians during an afternoon of workshops led by Calgary vibraphonist Arnold Faber, and Toronto musicians Quinsin Nachoff (saxophone), and trumpeter (flugelhorn) Jim Lewis. The master musicians will perform with the students during concerts slated for Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.

A premier performance of the 17-piece Paul Read Orchestra will close the festival Sunday night.
