Northern Lights Quartet Perform Farewell Concert in Calgary
The Northern Lights Quartet (Keith Smith (Guitar), Robin Tufts(Percussion), John Hyde (Bass) and Bruce Petherick (Piano) perform a Farewell concert Wednesday, September 27 at Beat Niq before heading off to appear at the Giant Steppes Jazz Festival in Mongolia.
Mongolia’s Ministry of Education has invited Northern Lights Quartet to support the fledgling festival and growing jazz scene through performances, workshops, and contributions to the Jazz Listening Library. The group will make a mainstage appearance, and will collaborate with students and musicians of that nation in other performances and at the Mongolian Jazz Academy.
Established with support from Calgary musicians in 2002, the Jazz Listening Library in Ulaanbaatar is being expanded by Canadian artists who are donating their recordings. In addition, the local business community in Calgary is contributing educational materials, including sheet music and instruction books, as well as some instruments. The Northern Lights group will present the materials to the Listening Library when they tour Mongolia next week.
The Farewell concert at Beat Niq will be a fundraiser to help raise contributions for the library. If you wish to donate, bring items to the show. The group is accepting CD’s and music accessories, and are seeking woodwind accessories such as reeds.
The show starts at 8:30 p.m. and the cover charge is $10. All money raised will go toward the Mongolian Jazz tour.
