Chicago blues singer calls Edmonton to “be a witness”

Considered one of Chicago’s top vocalists according to Living Blues Magazine (May 1997), Chicago blues singer Deitra Farr performs at the Yardbird Suite in Edmonton this weekend.

Deitra Farr has been described as fiery, energetic, and soul-stirring, and has been pleasing audiences with her distinctive, soulful voice and smooth style for over three decades. Her talent doesn’t end there, she is also an accomplished songwriter, artist, poet, and writer.

Beginning her career as a teen in the mid-70’s singing in local soul bands, Deitra switched gears to start a blues career in the early 1980’s, gaining recognition over the next decade as lead vocalist for renowned Chicago band Mississippi Heat.

In 1997 Deitra retraced her soul roots and released her solo CD “The Search is Over”, following it with “Let It Go” (2005) on the London-based JSP records. She has also appeared on a dozen recordings with other artists.

Deitra has toured extensively throughout Europe, Canada, and the UK, and has received nominations for multiple awards including: Traditional Female Blues Artist of the year (1995 Handy Awards), Female Blues Artist of the year (1995, 1996 Living Blues Critics Awards), and 1998-2002 (British Blues Connection Awards).

Edmonton blues guitarist Jim Guiboche and his band will be backing up Deitra’s performance for the two night-engagement. The band features Graham Guest (piano), Dave Babcock (saxophone), Dave Bridges(bass), and Jim Berry (drums). Bandleader Guiboche is best known as leader of the popular blues band The Sleepers.
