Ross Porter, one of Canada’s leading jazz experts, is set to release his new book The Essential Jazz Recordings: 101 CDs (McClelland & Stewart) on Oct. 24.

A guide to the must-haves for jazz collectors, The Essential Jazz Recordings is an overview of Porter’s personal choices. Explaining the unique merits of each recording and providing background information on the music, the artist, and the recording, Porter profiles greats such as Louis Armstrong, Wynton Marsalis, and Billie Holiday, as well as Canadians Guido Basso, Phil Nimmons, and Diana Krall, among the many.

Ross Porter, who is recognized for his distinctive radio voice, is president and CEO of JAZZ.FM91 in Toronto. Previously, he was the host and producer of CBC Radio Two’s “After Hours” and later headed up the specialty TV channel Cool TV. Recently he was presented with the CanWest Global Award for outstanding contribution to jazz, and in February 2002 he was voted the top broadcaster at the first National Jazz Awards.
