Western Canadian Music Awards Handed Out Last Night in Winnipeg
Western Canada’s music community wrapped up four days of industry showcases and seminars with the Western Canadian Music Awards ceremony on Sunday night in Winnipeg.
Roots performer Corb Lund was the big winner, taking home multiple trophies including Outstanding Roots Recording for his album Hair In My Eyes Like A Highland Steer, as well as Outstanding Songwriter and Outstanding Independent Album; while pop star Jann Arden took home the award for Outstanding Pop Recording for her self-titled album and shared the Producer of the Year award with Russell Broom.
Hosted by kids entertainer Al Simmons and radio deejay (and Sun columnist) Ace Burpee, the awards ceremony was held at the Burton Cummings Theatre. Attended by an audience of nearly 1,000 musicians, music biz insiders, and fans, who came to watch the awards being handed out to nominees from B.C., the Yukon, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
The host city of Winnipeg had a decent showing at the podium, with local artists Bif Naked (video of the year for Let Down), the Perpetrators (outstanding blues recording for The Gas and the Clutch), Mood Ruff (outstanding rap/hip hop recording for I Do My Own Stunts), and Fresh I.E. (outstanding Christian recording for Truth Is Fallin’ In tha Streetz) taking home awards.
Vancouver trumpeter Brad Turner took the award for Outstanding Jazz Recording, while Winnipeg’s The Perpertrators received the nod for Outstanding Blues Recording.
