Calgary Jazz Quintet Debuts Self-titled CD
Calgary jazz quintet Verismo is releasing their self-titled debut CD this Thursday, November 2, at Beat Niq Jazz Club. Verismo (Logarhythms) features a modern jazz to hard bop mix of originals composed and performed by some of western Canada’s finest jazz instrumentalists.
Formed in 2001 by saxophonists Jeremy Brown and Pat Belliveau, Verismo includes John Hyde (bass), John DeWaal (drums), and Derek Stoll (piano). The CD features compositions by the ensemble members, as well as three contributions from saxophonists Brian Christensen, Bob Mintzer, and Harold Land.
Of note is that the recording is the first made in Calgary for the CBC Radio program JazzBeat, the first project recorded here in the twenty-year history of the show. Producer Claire Lawrence acts as producer, with the project being coordinated through local CBC producer Harold Gillis and saxophonist Jeremy Brown.
