Alto saxophonist Maceo Parker joined by Hayley Sales for Vancouver show

Maceo Parker, the alto sax player whose sound is synonymous with the last forty years of funk, will be in Vancouver on Friday, November 17 at the Commodore. Joining Parker for the concert will be special guest Hayley Sales.

Alto saxophonist Maceo Parker is considered a pioneer of modern funk and hip-hop, leaving a footprint with his four decade career in the genre. He got his start in the ’60s with James Brown, where his signature style helped define Brown’s brand of funk for over twenty years. He went on to work with other legends of the idiom, from George Clinton and his Funkadelic/Parliament groups, to Bootsy Collins and Prince.

Embraced by the college crowd when he released his third solo recording in ’92, his sound, which explores contemporary and traditional funk, mellower jazz and hip-hop, has been and continues to be in-demand through the decades, with his name appearing on recordings by Ray Charles, Ani DeFranco, James Taylor, Dave Matthews, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and De La Soul among the many.

In 2003, after several years as Band Leader for the Rhythm and Blues Foundation Awards Maceo received a Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation for his contribution as a sideman to the genre of R & B.

His discography boasts dozens of albums as sideman, many of them seminal in the development of funk and hip-hop. His last three releases Funk Overload, Dial M-A-C-E-O and Made by Maceo entered the top 40 in the European charts upon release. His newest album School ’s In! was released in 2005.

Vancouver Island singer/ songwriter Hayley Sales joins the funk-master for the Commodore performance.
