Inaugural event celebrates the best in Aboriginal music

The inaugural Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards were held in Winnipeg on Thursday, November 2nd. Hosted by Cheryl McKenzie and Madeleine Allakariallak of the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network, the event included awards presentations and performances by nominees.

The Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards winners were chosen by the public from around the world, who cast their ballots online. Categories included: Best Rock CD, Best Country CD, Best Rap/Hip-hop CD, Best Folk/Acoustic CD, Best New Artist, Best New Group/Duo, Best Songwriter, Single of the Year.

The winner of the first-ever Aboriginal Peoples Choice Award for ‘Best Blues CD’ is Winnipeg-based Billy Joe Green, one of Canada’s most recognized blues artists.

The Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards provides an opportunity to showcase Aboriginal music to the rest of the world and to expose Aboriginal recording artists to a national fan base, music industry, and media.

The event is the precursor to the 13th annual Canadian Aboriginal Festival, to be held this year November 24, 25 & 26th at the SkyDome in Toronto. The event features performances, workshops, and a variety of activities and experiences including shopping, food, spectacular dancing, lacrosse, contemporary music, visual arts and many others.
