Edmonton’s Yardbird Plays Host to Guitarist Jim Head’s Quartet

Guitarist and composer Jim Head makes an appearance this weekend at Edmonton’s Yardbird Jazz Suite, performing two nights with Montreal brothers Chet (tenor saxophone) and Jim (drums) Doxas, along local stalwart Rubim de Toledo (bass).

The Jim Head Quartet featuring the Doxas Brothers will perform a selection of new compositions and choice standards Friday & Saturday, Nov. 17-18.

Once a graduate and now a faculty member of Grant MacEwan College’s music program, Head went on to gain his Masters degree in Jazz Performance at McGlll University in Montreal. He has toured across Canada, as well as the US, China, and Mexico, sharing the stage and/or recording with an impressive list of Canadian and international jazz greats including Tim Hagans, Sheila Jordan, Kirk MacDonald, P.J. Perry, Rob McConnell, Owen Howard, Dave Restivo, Andrew Downing, Andre White, Campbell Ryga, John Stetch, Keiran Overs, Hugh Fraser, Doug Riley, Remi Bolduc, Bob Mover, Jane Bunnett, Jim Vivian, Pat LaBarbera, Steve Wallace, and Chris Tarry.

Jim debut solo outing Mind’s Eye was released this year to critical acclaim, garnering an 8 1/2 star rating from Len Dobbin of the Montreal Star. The CD features Josh Rager (Fender Rhodes), Jim Vivian (bass), and Owen Howard (drums).

Brothers Chet and Jim Doxas grew up in a music home in Montreal, where their father George was a director of the High School music program. Going on to perform at Carnegie Hall and receiving Grammy-nominations for their soundtrack work, the Canadian greats have built an international reputation for their virtuosity. The pair appear on over 80 recordings apiece, and are leading figures in the Canadian and international jazz scenes.
