Calgary’s Johanna Sillanpaa at the Yardbird Friday
The Yardbird Suite features Calgary vocalist Johanna Sillanpaa this Friday for a night of funky soul, pop and jazz grooves. Joining Sillanpaa for the show are fellow Calgarian Kodi Hutchinson (bass), and Edmonton greats Chris Andrew (piano), Jim Head (guitar), Kodi Hutchinson (bass), and Rob Vulic (drums).
Sillanpaa’s sultry voice has been described as ” a bluesy Erykah Badu with a marvelous voice that begins in the smoky lows of Norah Jones and effortlessly climbs into the powerful, confident ranges of Lisa Stansfield.”
The talented singer and songwriter wrote her 2006 acclaimed solo album Good Life, receiving rave reviews and airplay from around the globe.
A native of BorĂ¥s, Sweden, Johanna moved to Canada in the mid-nineties and now makes Calgary home. She began singing professionally in her early teens, and upon her arrival in Canada studied vocals at MacEwan College, as well as at the Banff Centre for the Arts with vocal legends Sheila Jordan and Jay Clayton.
Following her passion for music, she has carved a large and loyal fan base with her live performances, and receives radio airplay in Canada, the US and the UK. Johanna’s critically acclaimed solo album ‘Good Life’ has been receiving rave reviews from around the globe since its release in mid 2006. Critics call it an achievement in minimalist complexity and a beautiful fusion of soul, pop and jazz.
