Vancouver plays host to concert of exotic rhythms, sounds
The South Delta Jazz Festival continues its ongoing concert series this Friday with the presentation of two of Vancouver’s premier world music ensembles Ta Ki Ta, and Sangha, for an exotic blend of traditional Indian, Persian and improvised jazz music. The concert will feature each group performing individually, and then joining forces for a combined effort.
Ta Ki Ta combines North Indian classical music, jazz, and other world music styles upon Eastern and Western instruments, rhythms and melodies. Ta Ki Ta is formed by Hari Pal (tabla), Jared Burrows (guitar), and Ken Wells (sarode). The group’s name, Ta Ki Ta is a reference to the syllables commonly used in Indian music to represent a three-part rhythm. The group recently released their self-titled album, and is planning a western Canadian concert tour to promote the recording.
Sangha is a Tar, Oud, Tombak and Tabla Quartet from Vancouver B.C., and formed by Gord Grdina (guitar), Neelamjit Dhillon (tabla), Hamid Honari (tar). A combination of improvisational traditions, predominantly Arabic, Persian and Indian, one will hear Indian classical rhythms mixed with Persian improvisation in one piece, Arabic melodic modulation set in a Persian mode in another, and an African melody set inside a westernized improvisational structure in the next. Sangha has performed for Caravan World Rhythms, Kelowna’s Summer Arts Festival, the Asian Heritage Month Western Front concert series, a CBC National broadcast, and the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Gardens Enchanted Evenings concert series. Shangha is currently recording their debut CD due for release shortly.
This concert is presented as part of the South Delta Jazz Festival community outreach series.
