Calgary saxophonist Pat Belliveau appears in quintet this weekend in Calgary for two nights of hard bop and classic jazz. Joining Belliveau for the performances at Beatniq Jazz Club is special guest saxophonist Jim Brenan. Filling out the band will be Derek Stoll (piano), John Hyde (bass), and Jon McCaslin (drums).

Belliveau, one of the leading lights in Canadian jazz, has toured throughout North America, Europe, and Japan. His performance and recording credits are lengthy, and include jazz quintet Quintonal , Saxoffonee, the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra,Vic Damone/Diahann Carroll, the Mills Brothers, Maureen McGovern, and Mel Torme, as well as appearances with Bob Mintzer, Randy Brecker, Harry Connick Jr., Bobby Shew, Clark Terry, Pat LaBarbera, Phil Woods, Mike Tomaro, Steve Slagle, Kenny Wheeler, Dave Koz, Lenny Pickett, Guido Basso, Rob McConnell, Sam Noto, Peter Appleyard, Phil Nimmons, David Foster, Hal Linden, Johnny Mathis, Ben Vereen, The 5th Dimension, The Temptations, Clarence Clemons and the “Temple of Soul”, Jack Semple, Lighthouse, and The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. The array of credits is an indicator of the musician’s versatility and demand for this fine player’s talents to music communities around the world.

Pat is an Artist/Clinician for “Yamaha Canada Music Ltd.” and endorses the “82Z” design saxophone. To date he has released one CD as leader – “La Zona Blanca,” featuring trumpeter Bobby Shew, drummer Paul Wertico, and saxophonist Kirk MacDonald. He can also be heard on forty CDs as a sideman as well as numerous regional and national radio and television themes and jingles.

In addition, Pat is a faculty member at the University of Calgary, teaching jazz saxophone, harmony, and improvisation. He is a sought-after private clinician, and is active as a clinician/adjudicator for festivals, schools, and various adult groups throughout Canada. He is a co-founder and past Vice-President of the Calgary Jazz Association (CJazz), is currently a member of the artistic committee for the annual CJazz Festival.

Pat holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Calgary, has attended many workshops and clinics, and has done private study with various jazz people including trumpeters Bobby Shew, Dominic Spera, and Greg Bush, as well as saxophonists Kirk MacDonald, George Robert, Roger Rosenberg, Tim Ries, Bob Mintzer and George Coleman.
