Tenor Saxophonist Kirk MacDonald in Regina with All-Star Trio

Toronto saxophonist Kirk MacDonald heads to Regina next Thursday, Feb. 22 to perform with his all-star trio of bassist Neil Swainson and drummer Joe LaBarbera. The concert is set to take place at the University Theatre at 8:00 p.m, and is a collaborative presentation by the University of Regina, the National Saxophone Alliance, and Jazz Regina.

Tenor-player Kirk MacDonald has established a national identity over the past decade. His throaty, full-bodied sound graces numerous recordings, and his performances across the country have made him a must-see attraction. Coupled with superb compositional abilities, his complete musicianship gives him a creative edge.

Neil Swainson (bass) began in Victoria with Paul Horn, played with Woody Shaw frequently in the 1980s and also gigged with James Moody, George Coleman, and Zoot Sims. A member of Moe Koffman’s quintet during 1978-1982, Swainson gained his greatest fame working with George Shearing from 1988 until the late ’90s.

Joe LaBarbera (drums) has enjoyed a career that has taken him all over the world with some of the finest names in jazz. Jazz great Bill Evans summed it up best when he said that “Joe is very dedicated to playing quality music and he’s willing to make the concessions of dues toward that end. He’s a top soloist and he does the right thing at the right time.”
