Calgary Announced as Host for 2008 Junos

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) has announced that the 2008 Juno Awards will be held in Calgary, with a three-day celebration culminating in the 2008 Juno Awards gala to be broadcast on CTV on April 6, 2008.

Organizers Melanie Berry, CARAS President and Deputy Mayor Joe Ceci made the announcement at a media conference yesterday.

“Calgary has a thriving music scene,” said Berry, “there is an extraordinary energy in Calgary right now and we are thrilled that the 2008 JUNO Awards will be part of this renaissance happening in the West.'”

Calgary will host the Juno celebrations — set to a theme of the “Wild West,” beginning April 4 and building to the gala Juno Awards event on April 8, 2008. It will be the second time the traveling show has been held in the province, having taken place in Edmonton in 2004. Some of the dynamic events slated to take place at part of the Calgary event include the popular Juno Cup celebrity fundraiser hockey game benefitting MusiCan, CARAS’ music education program, Junofest, a multi-venue two-day musical showcase of local and national artists; Songwriters’ Circle, featuring Canada’s premiere songwriters, and Juno Fan Fare, an opportunity to get up close with their favourite artists including autograph sessions and interviews.

Staging the Junos costs an estimated $1.5 million, but organizers say the annual event generates more than $10 million in spinoff revenue.

Since 2002, the Juno Awards — Canada’s most prominent musical honours — have also been presented in St. John’s, Ottawa, Edmonton and Winnipeg. The roving, cross-country stops allow organizers to shine the spotlight on local musicians during musical events and showcases ramping up to the main awards broadcast.

The 2007 gala is slated for April 1 in Saskatoon, with nominee and pop star Nelly Furtado set to host.
