CBC’s Jazz Beat to End March 19

Since October 3, 1883, Canadian jazz lovers have been tuning in to listen to Jazz Beat and host Katie Malloch, one of Canada’s most recognized jazz broadcasters who has been with the show from the start.

Malloch and her producer Claire Lawrence have been presenting the best in Canadian and international contemporary jazz, featuring concert recordings and studio sessions, current and classic CD releases for nearly 25 years.

Katie began freelancing at CBC in 1972, and became a staff announcer at CBC Montreal in 1975. She hosted the local afternoon radio show until 1980, as well as doing “That Midnight Jazz”. From 1980 to 1983, she hosted “Radioactive”, a program of francophone music for CBC’s English network, and did local television work in Montreal. But the jazz bug was firmly implanted in her system, and in 1983, she and producer Alain de Grosbois teamed up to create “Jazz Beat”, a network show that combined discs and live recordings, both concert dates and studio sessions. Canadian jazz musicians figure prominently in the Jazz Beat mix; every show includes a session from a Canadian group, sometimes established, sometimes new to the scene.

Over the years of Jazz Beat’s history, Katie has hosted twelve special “live” evenings of jazz from the Montreal International Jazz Festival, and has done upwards of 300 interviews for Jazz Beat. Some of her favorites have included Carmen McRae, Kenny Barron, John Scofield, Gary Burton and Milt Hinton.

CBC Radio Two has announced that as of March 19, 2007 it will no longer be airing Jazz Beat. The Broadcaster has announced a new program will take its place, running weeknights from 6-8 pm on Radio Two. It will combine jazz, Latin, soul and a touch of world music.

Jazz Beat Broadcast time:
Sundays at 8:00 p.m. (9:00 AT, 9:30 NT) on CBC Radio Two
Sundays at 11:00 p.m. (12:00 AT, 12:30 NT) on CBC Radio One
