Yardbird Suite Marks Historical Event with Local Greats

This weekend marks the first of the Yardbird Suite’s 50th Anniversary Shows, a special series of jazz concerts that will run at the club for the next five weekends to mark the auspicious occasion.

For their first outing of the series, the Suite has chosen to celebrate with cream of the Edmonton jazz scene, featuring The Yardbird Suite All Stars. Opening the show each night will be solo piano performances by Chris Andrew (Friday), and George Blondheim (Saturday).

The Yardbird Suite All Stars easily live up to their moniker. Formed by a group of some of the finest musicians on the jazz scene today, they’ve all contributed to the success of Canada’s longest running jazz club, and all have long and impressive careers as leaders in the jazz music industry of our nation.

The Yardbird Suite All Stars include Senator Tommy Banks (piano), Ken Chaney (piano), Kent Sangster (alto, tenor saxophone), Bob Tildesley (trumpet), Bobby Cairns (guitar), Mike Lent (bass), and Blaine Wikjord (drums).

On Saturday night, the group will be joined by two of Calgary’s leading musicians, saxophonist Eric Friedenberg, and trumpeter Al Muirhead, representing the roots of jazz music in that city.

Other performers scheduled throughout the month include vocalist Mark Murphy, keyboard/organist Doug Riley, and the Edmonton Jazz Orchestra with Lew Tabackin, among the first-rate lineup.
