Calgary Jazz Musicians Perform Concert in Canmore
The 2007 Canmore international Jazz Festival is proud to present Calgary musicians Keith Smith (guitar) and Simon Fisk (double bass) at St Michael’s Church Hall on Tuesday March 27 at 7:30 p.m. The concert is a warm-up to the festival, running June 22 & 23, 2007.
Smith and Fisk have been performing together since their first collaborative effort at the Sylvan Lake Jazz Festival in 2005. The Canmore concert will feature Smith’s original material influenced by the Pat Metheny/Charlie Haden duo sound, as well as Bill Frisell’s simple and moving recordings. Technical virtuosity is set aside in favour of simple musical statements that touch the heart. Look for Smith & Fisk’s forthcoming release on Plunge Records.
Keith Smith’s roots stem from his playing alto sax in a swing dance band in the early 1960’s. Since arriving in Calgary ten years ago, he has been predominantly involved with the jazz scene. He toured Mongolia in 2006 with the Northern lights Jazz Quartet and is currently a member of the Prime Time Big Band. He also occasionally shares the stage with Amos Garrett in quintet or trio format.
Simon Fisk is a jazz bassist who has recorded and performed extensively since the early 1990’s. He has worked primarily in the jazz trio format with pianist Chris Gestrin and drummer Tom Foster. The two sides of his musical persona –the improviser and the songwriter- play off each other and in turn give his band mates open territory to express themselves without formal boundary.
The March 27 performance is the first of the new series that the Jazz Festival Society will be presenting jazz at St Michael’s on the last Tuesday of each month.
