Canadian Embassy Theatre in Tokyo Named for Oscar Peterson
The Canadian Embassy Theatre in Tokyo has been named the Oscar Peterson Theatre, according to announcement made yesterday by The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.
The theatre is one of the most utilized facilities at the Embassy, hosting a variety of public events including lectures, seminars, presentations, film-screenings, and concerts by established and emerging Canadian artists.
With a career in jazz music that spans over six decades, Dr. Oscar Peterson, an Order of Canada recipient, has toured Japan over 40 times. He has been recognized with the prestigious Praemium Imperiale, an honour presented annually by the Japan Art Association that recognizes the highest international distinction for achievement in the arts. Following the honours, Mr. Peterson was received by the Emperor and Empress of Japan at the Imperial Palace.
“Oscar Peterson is a jazz legend in Canada and around the world,” said Minister MacKay. “He has received many awards and has demonstrated the importance of the arts in fostering strong ties between nations as culturally diverse as Canada and Japan. Given his distinguished reputation in Japan, there is no other overseas Canadian venue more suited to the Oscar Peterson name.”
“I am greatly honoured by this dedication and am pleased that my name has found a permanent home in Japan at Canada’s Embassy,” said Mr. Peterson.
