International quartet premieres debut CD in Calgary

Calgary drummer Tyler Hornby and Poland’s Maciek Grzywacz Quartet join forces for the Canadian premiere of their CD Release of Forces Within at Beat Niq Jazz Club in Calgary on Friday & Saturday, April 13 & 14.

Guitarist Grzywacz and fellow bandmembers make a return visit from Poland to Canada for the appearance, having first traveled here to perform with Tyler Hornby in Calgary and Edmonton last May. Hornby also travels to Europe to perform with the group, and will be making a trip there this May to join the quartet for several Eastern European dates in support of the new CD release.

Forces Within, the group’s debut recording, features Grzywaczs’ contemporary compositions performed by the guitarist and fellow Polish jazz musicians including saxophonist Maciej Sikala and bassist Piotr Lemanczyk, along with Tyler Hornby on drums.

Maciek Grzywacz is a graduate of the Academy of Music in Warsaw, as well as Munich (Germany). “Forces Within” is his second solo CD project. His previous recording, “Things Never Done”, saw him teaming up with outstanding New York trumpeter Avishai Cohen. Maciek Grzywacz’s other credits include two Fryderyk award-nominated albums by the group (0-58), as well as recording and performing with groups led by Piotr Lemańczyk, including Zbigniew Namysłowski, Jakob Dinesen and Adam Pierończyk.

Tyler Hornby is one of Canada’s most remarkable modern drummers, and performs regularly with world-renowned jazz luminaries like Bob Mintzer, Randy Brecker, Ingrid Jensen, Alain Caron, Brad Goode, Chip Stephens and Mike Tomaro. He is a graduate of the jazz programs at the Universities of Calgary as well as Colorado, where he studied under Grammy-winning drummer/percussionist Paula Romaine (Woody Herman Big Band). His recording credits include two albums as co-leader of the group Terrain, as well as his own CD “Shadows of a Brighter Day”, which was released in 2005.
