Hammond B3 Grand Master Joey DeFrancesco Tonight

Hammond B3 grand master Joey DeFrancesco makes a few choice appearances in Canada this month, stopping tonight in Calgary before heading off to Vancouver for three nights. DeFrancesco will be performing with his trio of guitarist Jake Langley (2006 National Jazz Awards Guitarist of the Year) and drummer Byron Landahm at Quincy’s on 7th. Opening the show is Calgary blues harmonica player Richie Pollack.

The global jazz community has credited Joey DeFrancesco and his recordings from the late 1980s and early 1990s as the singular sensation for rekindling a love for the Hammond B-3 organ.

At 16, he was the first recipient of the Philadelphia Jazz Society’s McCoy Tyner Scholarship and a finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition. Then came Miles Davis, the first of many legendary associations on a resume that would someday include Philly Jo Jones & Hank Mobley (at 10 years of age), Grover Washington Jr. (at 14 years of age), Miles Davis (at 17 years of age) his first Columbia Records release (at 16 years of age), John McLaughlin, George Benson, Ray Charles, Jack McDuff and Jimmy Smith, among the many.

Today, at 36 years old, with over 20 solo release on Columbia and Concord records coupled with historic associations with legends of the jazz idiom, DeFrancesco’s legacy is fully cemented in jazz history.
