Ryga/Perry Quintet to Perform Pair of West Coast Dates

Two of western Canada’s Juno Award-winning jazz saxophonists, Cam Ryga and PJ Perry, lead a top-drawer quintet for two dates this coming weekend. The alto men will be joined by Bill Coon (guitar), Jodi Proznick (bass), and Craig Scott (drums) for the west coast engagements.

On Friday, April 20, the group will appear at Cellar Jazz in Vancouver, and on Saturday, April 20 as part of the Jazz on the Peninsula Series in White Rock.

P.J. Perry has become recognized by critics, colleagues and listeners as being one of North America’s premier saxophonists. P.J. has shared the stage with countless jazz greats such as Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Shaw, Michel LeGrand, Pepper Adams, Kenny Wheeler, Tom Harrell, and The Boss Brass among others. Winner of a 1993 Juno Award for Best Jazz Recording for his album “My Ideal”, P.J. has received Jazz Report magazine’s Critic’s Choice Award for Best Alto Sax for, a record seven years from 1993 to 1999.

Cam Ryga is one of Canada’s most acclaimed jazz musicians. Winner of Jazz Report’s “Alto Saxophonist of the Year” award in 2000, he also won 3 Juno Awards, with two additional nominations, a Grammy nomination and has twice received the Western Canadian Music Award in the Jazz category. Cam was born in Edmonton in 1961, grew up in Summerland, BC, traveled extensively including lengthy stays in Vancouver in the early to late eighties, then several years in Toronto before moving back to Vancouver in the mid-nineties, where he still lives.

Forming the foundation for the two saxophonists are Vancouver guitarist Bill Coon, White Rock native Jodi Proznick on bass, and Chilliwack-based Craig Scott on drums.
