Award-winning guitarist/composer Occhipinti releases new album

Toronto jazz greats Michael Occhipinti & Creation Dream visit Edmonton this weekend to perform at the Yardbird Suite on Saturday, April 28. Occhipinti’s trio includes bassist (and brother) Roberto Occhipinti and drummer Barry Romberg.

Winner of the 2002 National Jazz Award for Guitarist of the Year and a six-time Juno Award nominee for Best Contemporary Jazz Album, guitarist/composer Michael Occhipinti’s modern and eclectic approach to jazz and creative music of all kinds has earned him a broad array of listeners and the respect of critics and musicians alike. His Creation Dream -The Songs of Bruce Cockburn (2002 – True North/Universal/Rounder) received international acclaim for his ambitious arrangements.

Chasing After Light (True North/Universal), Michael Occhipinti’s April 10, 2007 release, follows-up Creation Dream and features the guitarist in a quintet setting with renowned clarinetist Don Byron, trumpeter Kevin Turcotte, violinist Hugh Marsh, drummer Barry Romberg, and bassist Andrew Downing, as well as a guest appearance by Roberto Occhipinti (bass). The music is blend of folk sounds (Cuban music, African blues, and a Bruce Cockburn inspired acoustic guitar composition) with a modern approach to jazz improvisation.
