Chris Andrew – Christine Jensen Group at Yardbird This Weekend

Montreal saxophonist Christine Jensen joins Edmonton pianist Chris Andrew this weekend at the Yardbird Suite to present compositions from both composer’s books. Joining the two to fill out the Chris Andrew-Christine Jensen Group are bassist Rubim De Toledo and drummer Sandro Dominelli.

Familiar to Alberta audiences as one of the co-founders of the Latin group Bomba and as a member of the contemporary jazz group the DADS Trio among his many projects, Chris Andrew has toured across Canada a number of times, and in Cuba, where he also spent time studying.

Andrews has built an impressive list of performance/recording credits, including such notables as Joshua Redman, Sonny Fortune, Bud Shank, Pete Christlieb, and Joe LaBarbera to name a few. On the local scene, Chris has performed or recorded with numerous well known groups including The Jump Orchestra, Maracujah, Bomba, Kelly Allana, Tim Tamashiro, The Swinging Bovines, The Edmonton Symphony, Phatty, and The Devoties. Chris spent the first half of 2005 as the musical director for the Decidedly Jazz Danceworks show ¡BULLA!, in which the song 3 Corners of Emotion from the Hutchinson Andrew Trio was featured, and is currently involved with Rawlco Radio, co-producing, arranging and recording 10 albums including the 2006 release, Kris.

Christine Jensen has built a reputation as an original voice on both the Canadian and International jazz scene. In May 2000 she released her debut recording featuring her sextet entitled Collage on Effendi Records, which went on to receive rave reviews internationally.

Since graduating from McGill in 1994 Christine has been busy performing on the international jazz scene, while based out of Montréal. She is active as a composer, arranger and clinician. Recent highlights have included a Canadian tour with her sextet, performing a headline showcase at the International Association of Jazz Educators 2002 Conference, as well as The Mary Lou Williams Jazz Festival at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. She has frequently recorded projects for the CBC as well as Radio Canada, and made numerous festival appearances at the Montréal Jazz Festival with both her big band and small ensembles.
