Bomba Spices Up Yardbird Stage

Latin-jazz spices up the Yardbird Suite on Friday, May 25, when Bomba! hits the stage for a return visit to the club. The Edmonton ensemble, led by founders Mario Alende (percussion), Chris Andrew (piano), and Rubim de Toledo (bass), will add of Emilio Rios (vocals), guitar, Aldo Aguirre (violin), and Raul Tabera (drums, timbales) for the performance.

Bomba! was formed seven years ago, and since that time has toured across Canada, the US, Cuba and Korea, promoting their three CD’s and two videos. The group’s been nominated for national music awards, garnered a local Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, and three years ago was a CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award recipient.

Mario Allende, de Toledo and Andrew represent a new generation of musicians well schooled in traditional Latin music forms as well as contemporary jazz styles. The collaboration delves deeply into the roots of their music and draws a direct line between South and North America, with a repertoire culled from classic styles interspersed with contemporary flourishes.
Bomba’s current concert consists of a remarkable blend of instrumental, vocal and percussive song. This intermingling touches on Danzon, Rumba, Changui, Cha Cha Cha, Bossa Nova, Salsa, Songo, Lando, and Jazz music.
